Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

Need to share a folder of iPhone HEIC photos with someone who needs JPGs? Use Preview on your Mac to create JPEG copies, then send those copies instead of the originals. JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format.

Prepare the photos and an output folder

Start with the HEIC files available in a Finder folder. Keep the originals and create an empty folder such as “JPEG for sharing” for the results. Start with a few representative photos so you can judge quality before converting the whole set.

Batch convert with Preview

  1. Open Preview’s settings, go to Images, and enable the option to open groups of files in one window. Open your selected HEIC files together in Preview.
  2. Show the thumbnail sidebar from the View menu. Click a thumbnail, then press Command-A to select the batch; check that all intended thumbnails are highlighted.
  3. Choose File → Export, set the format to JPEG, and adjust quality. Choose your separate output folder and save.

Check the copies before sharing

  • Compare the output files with the photos you selected. If some are missing, return to the thumbnail sidebar and check the selection before exporting those photos again.
  • Open several JPEG copies and compare detail, orientation and appearance with their originals. Use Preview’s Info button to inspect file size and image resolution.
  • Try one JPEG in the receiving app or upload form before sending the full folder. Attach files from the output folder so you do not accidentally send the HEIC originals.

If a JPEG exceeds an upload limit, follow the Zipic batch compression guide using the JPEG copies, compare a sample, and keep the original HEIC files for future use.

If the batch does not export as expected

Only one photo was converted? Check which thumbnails were highlighted, not just which files were open. If photos opened in separate windows, change the group-opening setting and reopen them together.

JPEG is missing from the format list? Hold Option while opening the Format menu to reveal additional formats.
