BeeClear guide

Choose a Mac disk space analyzer: maps or cleanup review?

Start with the question you need answered. “Which folders occupy the disk?” calls for a visual map. “Which cleanup candidates should I review?” calls for file locations, categories and reasons. Choose the presentation that makes your next decision easier.

DaisyDisk’s map lets you explore folder sizes. Check the edition comparison if administrator scanning matters: the stand-alone edition includes it. That edition also reveals hidden space and purges purgeable space; the Mac App Store edition lists detection only for those two categories.

GrandPerspective is an alternative for a rectangular view. Its developer listing includes Quick Look, reveal in Finder, filters, and saving or exporting scan results. It is a useful starting point when you want to inspect large files and retain a scan for later reference.

BeeClear suits a cleanup-review task. It scans one selected internal or external disk at a time and shows suggested, optional and retained groups. Scanning and reviewing are free; cleanup requires a purchase. Retained items cannot be selected. Follow the installation and scanning guide.

Separate finding space from deleting files

  1. Scan the disk or folder relevant to your question.
  2. Open the path and inspect the file before deciding whether you still need it.
  3. Keep anything you cannot identify. A large file may be valuable, and a hidden-space label is not a deletion instruction.
  4. If using BeeClear cleanup, review the selected items before confirming: it permanently deletes them. Then inspect the itemized report and available-space change.

If you already know which type of data is taking space, use the Mac cleanup guide to choose the next action. A visual analyzer can also support cleanup: GrandPerspective, for example, includes deletion from its view. Choose the presentation and review sequence you prefer.
