How to Review Local AI Model Storage on Mac
Local AI models, download caches, project builds, and virtual machines are different kinds of data. A large size alone is not a reason to delete them together. After scanning with BeeClear, inspect paths, usage, and project references before reviewing optional items; retain active or uncertain data.
Distinguish models, caches, and virtual machines
- Local models: removing one may require downloading it again, so confirm its name and purpose first.
- Developer caches and dependencies: projects, lockfiles, or processes may still use them; review project state.
- Local virtual machines: these can contain tasks and user files and cannot be treated as replaceable model downloads.
How BeeClear reviews local models
BeeClear identifies local Ollama and OMLX models and considers running services and references in scanned projects. Active models, referenced models, and models whose project configurations could not be fully read are retained.
Models whose use by other software is uncertain require review and remain unselected by default. Ollama model removal is handled through Ollama, retaining shared data referenced by other models.
Claude local virtual machines may contain tasks and user files. BeeClear retains this data or reports its size rather than recommending the whole VM as ordinary model cache.
From scan to a cleanup decision
- Choose the disk to inspect in BeeClear and run a scan.
- Review names, paths, sizes, reasons, and retained states in the local-model category.
- Confirm whether each model is still part of your work and can be obtained again if needed. Keep uncertain items.
- Manually select only eligible items you no longer need, confirm cleanup, and review the itemized results and actual space change.
Model size is not always reclaimable space
Models can share data. A model’s displayed size is not necessarily the space that can be reclaimed independently by removing it. Use the cleanup result and newly measured available disk space.
